About this position
TNO at Holst Centre works with a range of thin-film technologies, originally developed for display and electronics applications, that have very interesting potential in the fast-growing domain of Energy Storage, either for electrical storage or in hydrogen as storage modality. Devices that are being developed at TNO at Holst Centre include next-generation batteries for electrical storage enabled by high-aspect ratio structures as well as new hydrogen electrolyser components. For these developments, TNO at Holst Centre works closely with the, local and international, ecosystems of start-ups and scale-ups as well as with other TNO departments such as Unit Energy Transition (ET) on the development of these types of functional devices. Thin/thick film process technologies employed to realize new functionalities in these domains include metal sputtering, spatial atomic layer deposition (sALD), (PE)CVD, and nano- and micro-scale structuring of materials via e.g. photolithography and/or replication technology (moulding, nanoimprint). In the domain of thin films batteries, in order to translate performance parameters into process technology and new functional device architectures, we are looking for a junior researcher to strengthen our team and extend our capability in understanding and characterization of batteries to realize integrated devices with improved performance.
What will be your role?
You will join the Thin-Film Electronics team to develop and realize the department’s program and project portfolio in the domain of Energy Storage, leveraging the department’s strengths in thin and thick film process technology and related technologies. Your daily activities will be varied since you will join a multidisciplinary team that executes multiple programs and projects with company partners and European consortia in parallel. Technically, you will research and develop advanced materials and device concepts for next-generation solid-state batteries which combine fast-charging with high-capacity and safe operation. The emphasis will be on understanding and optimizing the battery (electro)chemistry and device performance at materials and cell level, working at the interface of materials science and process technology
Your main activities will be to:
Develop and characterize new battery concepts for batteries based on large-area integrated thin film process flows;
Support the technical program roadmap and projects in batteries by (i) translating relevant state-of-art research topics into experimental plans and their execution together with the team members, and (ii) writing and execution funded projects in both National and European context;
Perform electrical, electrochemical and material characterization to assess and improve performance of half-cells and full-cells;
Generate and report results that are either patentable or publishable in internationally renowned journals/conferences;
Work in a multidisciplinary, multi-company team, supervising and coaching of team members and students.
What we expect from you
PhD in Electrochemistry, Batteries, Materials Science or related research;
Several years of experience in research & development settings with an emphasis on device technology, preferably with a proven affinity with thin-film technology;
Expertise on solid electrolytes processing is desirable;
Pro-active and critical attitude towards analysis of thin-film processes with clear goal in mind;
Hands-on and taking responsibility, able to organize (practical) work in an efficient and cooperative way.
