What you will do
As a Researcher Laser Design and Test you will be part of the new photonics team at our Eindhoven site. You will work with other researchers and engineers to bring imec's research efforts to life and to make real-life designs and tangible prototypes. There are many fields in which low-noise narrow linewidth and tunable lasers are interesting (think of swept source OCT, long-range LiDAR, high bandwidth telecom), however, tuning a laser counteracts the narrowing of the linewidth. But how much? That is one of the topics you will focus on in this position. Besides, there are many aspects that add noise to systems: the temperature control, the tuning elements themselves, environmental influence, etc. You will join the laser-expertise center, that focuses on external cavity hybrid integrated lasers. Your responsibilities include:
Design new hybrid integrated external cavity diode lasers (Si, SiN, InP) that have low noise, are widely tunable, and operate at telecom and other wavelengths.
Deeply investigate the effect of various design choices on laser performance.
Setting up and performing experiments to validate concepts and prototypes.
Simulation and optimalisation of building blocks and performance of the system.
Work on system integration (i.e., low noise electronics, driving software, packaging etc.), together with other researchers and engineers.
(Continue to) develop a deep understanding and expertise in various aspects of laser behavior.
Acquire knowledge about the design layout in imec's integrated photonics and complementary platforms.
Your work will contribute to inventions, publications, key technology, or will be presented directly to customers.

Who you are
MSc with several years of experience or Ph.D. in Applied Physics or equivalent.
Experience in measuring laser systems (focus on wavelength tuning range, linewidth, noise, output power).
Basic understanding of laser behavior and the willingness to build up expertise in this area is a must.
Experience in working in a lab and measuring your designs is a must. Experience in measuring bare PIC's is a plus.
Experience in functional device simulation (spectral/time domain, VPI, Aurora etc.) is a must. Experience with software packages I.e., COMSOL, Lumerical and Synopsis is a plus.
Affinity with packaging is preferred.
Layout design experience is a plus.
Basic knowledge of electronics and noise sources is a plus.
Flexible team player, actively helping other team members, you see changes as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Quick learner, to be able and interested in acquiring new skills and competencies.
Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
