The energy transition is only as fast as the technologies that enable it. Yet significant barriers are preventing the industry from meeting future energy demand, achieving sustainability targets and supporting sustainable manufacturing. TNO at Holst Centre develops next-generation batteries with higher energy density, and next-generation electrolysers with higher efficiency and output. For both, we focus on longer lifetime and lower production costs. And crucially, we design the manufacturing technologies needed to produce them at scale and drive European competitiveness in the energy value chain.
Addressing energy challenges
Working from the specific needs and demands of the energy sector, TNO at Holst Centre applies its expertise across thin/thick-film technologies, advanced integration and 3D structuring to develop battery and electrolyser technologies that eliminate the barriers. For batteries, we target higher capacity and improved performance. For electrolysers, higher hydrogen production rates and efficiency. Across both technology lines, we focus on longer lifetimes and lower production costs, while reducing dependence on scarce materials and geopolitically sensitive supply chains.
At the same time, the manner in which these technologies are produced must also be addressed. Producers along the value chain work with TNO at Holst Centre to develop the precision manufacturing technologies required to bring our solutions to life, from flexible R&D tools to high-volume, roll-to-roll production equipment. By addressing both technology development and manufacturing optimisation, we offer continuous advancement of energy technologies that meet or exceed market demand, and position our partners in key control points in the European energy value chain.
Driving future development
TNO at Holst Centre works along the entire value chain, from early R&D to final production. In contracted work, joint innovation projects and consortia, we work to not only accelerate the energy transition, but also to position our Dutch and European partners as leaders in production, manufacture and application of next-generation batteries and electrolysers. Whether you are a material supplier, equipment manufacturer, stack or cell producer or end-user, we are eager to resolve your energy challenges and accelerate your development.
