Design specifications for next-generation electronics for the semiconductor, medical, space and defence domains are often limited by standard form factors, and use traditional printed circuit boards (PCBs) and planar manufacturing techniques. With 3D printing technologies, TNO at Holst Centre enables the on-demand production and local fabrication of specialised electronics that have circuitry and cooling systems built directly into their structure.
Patented and proven technologies
TNO at Holst Centre’s patented foil-laminated stereolithography (f-SLA) process is a scalable additive manufacturing technology that builds structures layer-by-layer using photosensitive resins and precision, foil-based recoating. With feature sizes down to 10 µm, conductive tracks, vias and micro-components can be embedded directly within the printed dielectric matrix for fully integrated architectures. Sensors, antennas, passive components and interconnects can all be embedded into three-dimensional substrates. The combination of 3D microelectronics with other features – such as microfluidics for on-chip cooling in advanced packaging – has also been demonstrated. The platform scales from coin-sized devices to smartphone-scale modules, while maintaining high-resolution interconnects.
Support for entire value chain
In addition to supporting increasingly complex and functional electronic designs with unlimited form factors, the f-SLA platform also reduces material waste and enables material selection freedom. TNO at Holst Centre not only provides the equipment for such specialised and precise microelectronic manufacturing, but also the expertise to determine the programming, algorithms, software and materials knowledge to drive the next generation of electronic devices. As one of the only institutes in the world that can fully embed electronics into the core design, TNO at Holst Centre stands ready to help develop the electronics systems never possible before.
